I have seen a few animal BJDs, foxes, dogs, dragons, horses... I even saw a ball jointed monster once.
You should become a member at the Joint http://www.denofangels.com/joints/
It's a forum for ball jointed doll makers and is full of logs and tutorials for making various dolls, even animals. You should take a look at that.
About the blueprint I suggest you either draw the horse (from the side and front) in size 1:1 and figure out where you want the joints to be. Or, you could find pictures of the internet and use them.

I found these two:
http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs33/i/2008/355/8/2/Draw_a_Horse_3_by_Ditroi.jpg
http://0.tqn.com/d/drawsketch/1/5/0/4/horse4.jpg

Some cutting and pasting and resizing and you should have a great blueprint. :)

I also found this one http://amandakathryn.deviantart.com/art/OOAK-unicorn-BJD-1-149866959?q=gallery%3Aamandakathryn%2F4764014&qo=1
Maybe you should ask her how she made it :)

Good luck with your horse, come back anytime to show me your progress please!

Hello,
I've always loved BJDs and I am getting started making my first one, but with a twist. Unfortunately, it seems there is nothing much about making animals, namely horses, so it seems I need to figure out a blueprint myself. I am planning on being able to make one, then taking it apart to try and cast it.
I was hoping that studying the BJD tutorials would help me with figuring out a blueprint but it would be nice if I could find some animal based tutorials that are not props. If you know where any might be, could you point me in the direction?
Thank you for this tutorial and any help you can offer :)

Now you have 8 pounds of eye putty! :D Don't worry, you could always make food stuff and other things for your doll with that clay. I am sure it will come to use.

Thanks for that! I ended up buying La Doll even though I have about 8 pounds of sculpey sitting in my room :P I figure the money spent will be worth a doll that doesn't crack.

Thanks for the luck! I'll need it.

<strong>"I’ll be using super sculpey clay. Instead of using foam as the core, will tinfoil work? It’s what I’ve always used with my clay before, but I don’t know how easy it would be to remove."</strong>

Super sculpey is known to break easily when cured. If you still want to use polymer clay instead of paper clay I suggest Super Sculpey Living doll, as that clay is much less fragile. Tinfoil will work fine as a core, but I would cover it with paper tape (or marker tape?) before covering that with clay and baking it. I wouldn't use foam at all when baking in the oven, the foam might melt or become toxic (it depends on the type of foam you use).
<strong>
How sturdy is a BJD made of clay?</strong>

  A BJD made out of Super Sculpey will most likely crack, I have seen a lot of people ending up with a cracked doll because they used Super Sculpey.
  A BJD made out of Super Sculpey Living Doll will not crack as easily. I have one in front of me right now and he is very sturdy, I have accidentally dropped his head and hands quite a few times and never have I seen him crack anywhere. He is even rebaked more than ten times. Rebaked clay tends to crack more easily.
A BJD made out of paper clay, and this is something many people do not know, are very very sturdy as well! They are hard to crack and easy as pie to repair. If this is an option for you, I would turn around and start making a doll out of paper clay instead. If you sand the parts enough the paper clay will get a beautiful shiny texture and look almost like resin.
<strong>
Would it be better to cast it in resin? (If so, got any good recommendations for resin casting tutorials?)</strong>
What's good about resin is that you can replicate your doll as much as you want, so even if it cracks you could just make a new part.
However, there are a lot of different resins around, different hardness, different properties ect... You should look what is available in your country.

If you have not already you should register at <a href="http://www.denofangels.com/joints/" rel="nofollow">The Joint </a>. It's a forum for BJD makers and you should find tons of links there for sculpting, casting ect.

I hope you got your answers and if something is unclear, please just ask. :) Good luck!

Love it! This was so much help for someone as new as me. A few questions:

I'll be using super sculpey clay. Instead of using foam as the core, will tinfoil work? It's what I've always used with my clay before, but I don't know how easy it would be to remove.

Second: How sturdy is a BJD made of clay? Will it crack at the joints? Would it be better to cast it in resin? (If so, got any good recommendations for resin casting tutorials?)
